Camping in Saale-Unstrut
Saale-Unstrut is Germany's northernmost quality wine region, with about 800 hectares of vineyards, and winegrowing here has been documented since the year 998. Terraced vineyards with centuries-old dry stone walls line the shell-limestone slopes between Freyburg, Naumburg, Bad Kösen, and Nebra, where the Saale and Unstrut rivers meet. Naumburg Cathedral has held UNESCO World Heritage status since July 1, 2018, known for its west choir and the founder's statue of Uta of Naumburg, carved in the workshop of the Naumburg Master. In Freyburg, the Rotkäppchen Sektkellerei, founded in 1856, produces Germany's best-selling sparkling wine, and near Nebra the Nebra Sky Disc was discovered in 1999, its find site within reach of the Arche Nebra visitor center. With about 1,600 hours of sunshine and only 500 millimeters of rainfall a year, the area is one of Germany's driest and sunniest wine regions.

September: Freyburg Wine Festival
On the second weekend of September, Freyburg hosts the Winzerfest, the largest traditional wine festival in central Germany, held in 2026 from September 11 to 13. Highlights include the crowning of the wine queen and the Sunday parade, with more than 30 floats winding through the old town.

Finnewanderweg
From Weißenfels the trail first follows the Saale valley, then climbs onto the wooded ridge of the Finne and later onto the Hohe Schrecke. A red triangle on white shows the way. Along it stand Naumburg cathedral and the Rudelsburg above the Saale, and at the end the Thüringer Pforte near Sachsenburg, where the Unstrut cuts through the ridge.

Himmelreichweg alias Geopfad Bad Kösen
Out of Bad Kösen the round climbs twice onto the heights above the Saale and back down, once on each bank. Up there stand the Rudelsburg and Burg Saaleck, which is more than nine hundred years old, with the Himmelreich inn between them. The view reaches far down the valley. Boards along the way tell how the river cut itself into the rock, and by way of Stendorf and Lengefeld the route returns to the town.

Zwei Täler Rundweg
The Nautschke and the Schoppbach, two small stream valleys, shape this round between Mertendorf, Gröbitz and Wethau. The walking is on field and forest tracks, with cobblestones in the villages and wide views over the fields in between. The climbs stay small. In Gröbitz the manor and the church stand close together, and above Wethau the old village church on its rise.

Saale-Unstrut-Elster-Rad-Acht
Two loops that cross in Naumburg and form a lying figure of eight on the map. The western one goes by Freyburg, Laucha and Bad Bibra along the Unstrut and the Ilm, the eastern one by Weißenfels and Zeitz through the hill country on the Weiße Elster. Side valleys with small streams run in between, among them the Wethau, the Biberbach and the Rippach. You can also ride just one loop.

The Unstrut rises near Kefferhausen in the Eichsfeld, and all the way to where it joins the Saale at the Blütengrund near Naumburg the route stays close to the water. Climbs hardly matter here. Between the Hohe Schrecke and the Ziegelroda plateau the valley opens out, and the vineyards of the Saale-Unstrut region stand on the shell limestone slopes.

Himmelsscheiben-Radweg
The route links the place where the sky disc was found, on the Mittelberg near Wangen, with the state museum in Halle where the disc is kept today. It begins in the wide Ziegelroda forest and then crosses the open Querfurt plateau with Querfurt castle on the horizon. Further east lies the Süßer See, with vines on its slopes. After that Halle begins.

Between the Arche Nebra and Querfurt castle the route stays almost entirely on unsurfaced paths and small boardwalks. It starts in the red sandstone of the Ziegelroda forest and climbs through the Wangener Grund and the Schmon valley onto the shell limestone of the Querfurt plateau. Fourteen boards explain the rock along the way. A good five hundred metres of climbing add up.

Animals you can meet here
March to JulyPeregrine falcon
Below Rudelsburg, on the Saale cliffs near Bad Kösen, the peregrine falcon nests in a niche of the rock face above the river. In gliding flight over the cliffs, its pointed, sickle-shaped wings and dark head markings stand out. Between March and July, the adults carry prey back to the nest, often after a steep dive from great height.
May to AugustEuropean bee-eater
On the steep sand walls at Geiseltalsee near Mücheln and Braunsbedra, the European bee-eater digs its nesting burrows into the sandy edges of the former open-cast mine. Turquoise back feathers, a yellow throat and a chestnut band on the nape set it apart from every other native bird. From May to August, the colonies hunt in gliding flight over the lake for bees, wasps and dragonflies, catching them on the wing.
March to AugustWhite stork
In the Unstrutaue near Memleben and Wethau, white storks return from March onward to their old nests on barn and church roofs in the middle of the villages. The black-and-white bird with red stilt legs and a long red bill is easy to recognize from a distance by its calm flight with its neck stretched out. Until August, the adults often stand motionless in the wet meadows, probing for frogs, insects and mice.
April to OctoberEurasian beaver
In the Unstrutaue between Roßleben and Memleben, near Burg Wendelstein, the Eurasian beaver has resettled and gnaws willows and poplars along the bank. Cone-shaped gnawed tree stumps and dams of branches and mud reveal its territory, even though the beaver itself is mostly active at dusk. From April to October, it is most easily observed in the evening hours, swimming with fresh shoots toward its lodge.

Good to know
Grilling yes, campfire no
At the campsite below the Rudelsburg near Bad Kösen an electric or gas grill needs no asking. A charcoal grill and a fire bowl with heat protection are fine after a word with the site management, campfires are not. All around lies the Naturpark Saale-Unstrut-Triasland. In Saxony-Anhalt, fire in the forest is reserved for public grilling sites.
Across the Saale by cable ferry
At the Naumburger Blütengrund, where the Unstrut meets the Saale, a hand-operated reaction ferry crosses from April to early November. It carries people, bicycles, dogs and prams, and.50 euros. High or low water can limit the service.
Nest Protection Zones for Specially Protected Birds
In Saxony-Anhalt, a 300-meter no-disturbance zone applies during the breeding season around the nests of peregrine falcons and other specially protected birds such as black storks and red kites. This includes the Saale cliffs below Rudelsburg castle near Bad Kösen, where peregrine falcons breed.
Leash Law During Breeding and Birthing Season
From March 1 to July 15, Saxony-Anhalt's state forest law requires dogs to be kept on a leash in fields and woods, to protect ground-nesting birds and young animals. The rule also applies in the vineyards and dry grasslands around Freyburg and the Tote Täler.
Weirs on the Saale near Bad Kösen
Canoeists on the Saale must portage around the weir at Bad Kösen, at river kilometer 171.5, and at the Altenburg weir; official put-in and take-out points are marked. The stretch from Bad Kösen via Naumburg to Weißenfels covers about 30 kilometers and takes roughly six hours to paddle.
RV Sites at Lake Geiseltal and in Freyburg
At Lake Geiseltal, the Mobilcamp El Retiro offers about 80 RV sites with power and water hookups, open year-round. In Freyburg, an additional RV site at Schützenplatz is available with no reservation required.
